I have a lot of makeup. There’s my favorite products that are always on rotation, the products I use less frequently but still love, and of course, the constant collection of new products I’m trying out. So it’s really easy for my makeup storage spaces to get crowded and unorganized if I don’t stay on top of it.

Makeup collections can get out of hand and unorganized pretty fast. This is definitely the case for me, and I think it’s the case for a lot of women. Between skincare products, makeup, hygiene essentials, and hair tools, the bathroom and its storage areas can easily become a tornado of loose products and tools. Especially if you share a bathroom with your significant other or children.

Recently I decided to make organizing my makeup spaces a priority. When my makeup collection is all over the place, I can’t find what I need in the moment, which is tough since I’m often in a rush getting ready. Or I find a product I haven’t used in a while (down somewhere in the depths of a drawer or makeup bag) that is partially full and expired and something I love but had just lost track of. I need easy access and visibility on all of the products in my collection so I find everything I need and see everything I have.

And I also want to keep everything clean and taken care of so it will last. I don’t want things just thrown in a drawer or bag to risk something popping open, breaking, or just making a mess. I also want my makeup brush bristles to stay fresh and just overall allow them to last as long as possible.

Anyway, since I’ve been really leaning into the makeup organization process, I thought this could also be helpful for you. So in this post, I’ll be sharing some ideas that are pretty simple but also provide efficient organization. Hopefully these ideas will help you keep your makeup and beauty products neat, tidy, and accessible at all times.

Makeup Organization Ideas

15 Makeup Organization Ideas

The very first step is to purge your makeup. It’s so fun that I get a lot of makeup sent to me from brands, but I’m guilty of holding onto something just because I might like it eventually. Instead, if there is a shade or a formula and I don’t like it after 2-3 uses, I set it aside. I give all my very minimally used makeup to my friends or my niece! They love it and I love that I’m not holding onto stuff that doesn’t get used.

1. Consider investing in a vanity.

If you’re like me and you’re a big makeup enthusiast, consider setting aside some space in your home for a vanity. After all, your makeup is something you’re probably going to do day-in and day-out, so why not devote a space entirely to that? Perks include that all your makeup and skincare is located in one place and that one place is not the bathroom. I considered this for our new house, but there isn’t a spot where it works well and where there is good lighting, so the bathroom is where I keep everything.

2. Opt for acrylic organizers and risers.

Acrylic organizers are ideal for storing makeup products. One – they’re clear, which makes keeping track of where all your products are a breeze. And two – they’re easy to clean, so getting a little makeup here and there is never a big deal. With so many colors, styles, and sizes to choose from, you can easily find the one that’s right for your space. That’s honestly the hardest part — finding ones that are the right size to nest well. This could be a perfect option – I have this beauty drawer organizer in my Walmart cart but I’m happy with the solution I have now so I have purchased yet!

3. Use stackable storage bins.

When you can’t organize outwards, organize upwards. Stackable storage bins are so convenient, because they only take up vertical space which may otherwise go unused. This is a super handy option because the top shelf slides!

4. Utilize the back of the door.

Usually when I think about back of the door storage, I think of shoes. But really, you can organize more than just your sneakers and flats on the back of the door. Although I wouldn’t recommend storing all your makeup products on the back of the door (although you could),  the back of the door is the ideal space to store larger items that take up much needed bathroom space and that can be shaken up a bit without cracking or breaking. Think hair styling tools, lotions and skincare products, deodorant, and more. With these large items out of the way, you will have more room for your array of makeup products.

5. Take advantage of extra wall space.

Like the back of the door, your extra wall space can easily transition into extra organizational space. Consider adding a cabinet, some floating shelves, or even just some command hooks to store or hang your products and get them off the counter and out of the drawers.

6. Pick up some drawer organizers.

Just like you’d organize your forks, spoons, and knives in a drawer organizer, you can do the same with your makeup products. Start by measuring your drawers, then choose the right organizers for your specific dimensions. Or, simply start with a multipack of various sizes and mix and match from there.

7. Consider investing in a rolling storage cart.

Similar to a vanity, a rolling makeup organizer will keep all your makeup products and tools together, but still out of the bathroom. But even more convenient than the vanity, you can take your rolling storage cart anywhere, anytime.

8. Sort products by category.

Some people say to sort products by how often you use them. However, I prefer to organize by category so I can see all my options together. So all eye products together, foundations together, concealers together, etc. If I sorted by everyday essentials and then pushed my other items to the back, I would definitely never use the other products. Out of sight, out of mind! See my everyday essentials, here.

9. Recycle used candle jars for brushes.

When you blow out your favorite candle for the last time, don’t just toss the jar. Instead, clean it out and use it to store your brushes. Candle jars are just the right size and height to hold your makeup brushes, and since most candle jars are clear, it’s easy to find just the one you’re looking for. I’m waiting for an empty candle jar to do this myself!

10. Upcycle old ice trays for single eye shadows.

Do you have a bunch of single eye shadows floating around?Instead of throwing them in a drawer or bag, consider upcycling an old ice tray. The single eyeshadows fit perfectly in the little holes and make it so much easier to keep track of all the colors you have. Pro tip: organize them in order of color too!

How to Organize Makeup in the Bathroom Specifically

11. Prioritize your daily essentials.

Rummaging through your beauty products when you’re running late is no fun ( I think we can all relate on that one), so make sure your everyday must-haves are within reach! Store your go-to products, like your favorite foundation, mascara, and lipstick, on the top shelf or in a bin dedicated to your daily essentials only. That way you can grab and go in no time and you always know where your most important products are. Perfect option if you are a ‘do your makeup in the carpool line’ mom. Like I mentioned above, I sort by category because I switch up my makeup routine almost daily, but if you don’t rotate what products you use regularly, then sorted by daily essentials will work well for you!

12. Purge those old and expired products.

It’s time to say goodbye to that old mascara from two years ago and hello to a neat and tidy bathroom. Make sure to regularly check your beauty products for expiration dates and toss anything that’s passed its prime. Not only will this make your bathroom look less cluttered, but it’ll also prevent any potential skin irritation or eye infections from using outdated products. Gross.

13. Store like products together.

One of the most basic, yet most useful organization ideas out there. Keep your lipstick with your lipstick, and your eyeshadow with your eyeshadow. This will make finding what you need super easy and save you time. You can even use small organizers within your larger organizer to keep things even more organized.

14. Maximize your space.

Make the most of every inch of your bathroom by using organizers that suit your needs. If you have a lot of beauty products, consider using stackable organizers or ones that hang on the back of your bathroom door. If you have limited counter space, you can even use suction cup organizers that stick to your bathroom mirror. (Just remember to invest in a good-quality suction cups so your products aren’t falling off the mirror everyday. ) The key is to find organizers that work for you and your space, so you can keep your beauty products organized and easily accessible.

Here’s a snap of my makeup draw before and then after!

How to Organize Makeup

makeup in drawer

The difference isn’t massive, but it feels SO much better. And now I know where everything goes.

I used 1 acrylic bin, two boxes (top and bottom, so four sections total) that sunglasses came in and then the extra space left is where I stacked my foundations and brushes. This shows that you absolutely don’t have to invest a lot of money in organizing systems, but it can take a while to find things around the house that work in the space. If you want to have it all match or just get it DONE, I listed a bunch of ideas below to organize your space with affordable options.

organized makeup storage

I organized by category, clockwise from top left. Blush and eyeshadow palettes. Then, bronzer and highlighter palettes. Next, foundations are next to my brushes (which I eventually want to store upright). Concealers and liquid highlighters are in the bottom right. Then liquid blushes and eye pencils (liner, brows, etc.). Then all my lipsticks, balms and glosses are in the clear acrylic bin. The green bag has all my mascaras.

15. Review often.

The best way to insure that your makeup organization stays organized is to go through it often. I’m going to make an effort to go through my makeup at least once every quarter, but ideally monthly, to see if I need to get rid of anything.

 Bathroom Makeup Organizers

Acrylic Organizers and Risers

These organizers are the perfect way to make the most of your vertical space on your bathroom countertops. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes and can be stacked on top of each other to create a multi-tiered system. This allows you to store a variety of makeup items in a compact and easy-to-see manner. You can even get creative and mix and match different sizes to create a unique and personalized storage solution.

Makeup Trays

Sometimes it’s much easier to organize your various makeup products when everything is laid out on one level, rather than packed into drawers. So, if you prefer to keep everything on ground level, consider a makeup tray instead of a tall organizer. This one has a mix of small and large holes, making it easy to store products of all sizes, including the smallest of items like fingernail polish.

Over the Door Hangers

Don’t underestimate the power of the back of your bathroom doors! This often-forgotten space can be used to store a variety of beauty supplies. You can hang over-the-door organizers or install hooks to hang items like hair brushes, towels, and robes. Also, consider attaching command hooks to the back of the door to hold items like necklaces and bracelets. This is a great solution for keeping your bathroom clutter-free and organized. Here’s another option I also like.

Mini Storage Boxes

Stackable and customizable, mini storage boxes are a good solution for small bathroom spaces. They come in a variety of sizes and materials and can be stacked on top of each other to create a multi-tiered storage system. You can use them for any kind of makeup storage that you don’t currently have enough space for. The best part? You can label the boxes and customize the arrangement to fit your specific needs.

Candle Jars for Makeup Brushes

Reuse those empty candle jars and give your makeup brushes a new home! Simply wash out the jars, remove any labels, and voila – you now have a cute and functional way to store your brushes. By keeping them in sight, you’ll probably also remember to clean your brushes much more often! Plus, bonus points for being eco-friendly by repurposing an item that would have otherwise gone to waste

Spice Racks

As it turns out, spice racks aren’t just for the kitchen. In fact, they are a fantastic way to store your nail polish collection. The small shelves are ideal for displaying your favorite shades, and the compact design makes it easy to find the color you’re looking for. Plus, it frees up valuable drawer and shelf space for other items. If you’d rather hang your spice rack, check out farmhouse style option.

Display Case

If you want to show off your beauty collection, a display case is the way to go! Cases come in a variety of styles and sizes and can be used to showcase your favorite items. This not only keeps your products visible and within reach, but it also adds a touch of glam to your bathroom. You can even get creative and use a display case to store items like perfumes, jewelry, and other aesthetic accessories.

Drawer Inserts

Inserts can be customized to fit your specific needs. Use them to separate items like eyeliners, lip liners, and mascara (see my roundup of the best tubing mascaras HERE ), making it easy to store your makeup and find exactly what you’re looking for.

Jewelry Storage

Keep your bling in one convenient spot with jewelry storage, while simultaneously making more room for your beauty products. This can be in the form of a jewelry box (smaller travel size HERE), a hanging organizer, or a wall-mounted shelf. Not only does this keep your jewelry tangle-free and easily accessible, but it also saves valuable bathroom counter space.

Wall Shelves

If you need extra storage space, make use of vacant wall space in your bathroom with shelves. They can be used to store (and show off!) items like skincare products, hair products, and makeup. The cherry on top? Floating shelves instantly elevate the vibe of any bathroom – no matter the style.

360-Degree Cosmetic Storage

Spin and store, it’s that simple! 360-degree cosmetic storage units are a great way to keep your beauty products organized and within reach. I use this under my sink for my skincare! These units feature multiple compartments that can be used to store items like makeup, skincare products, and brushes. The rotating design allows you to easily see and access all of your items, and the compact size makes it a perfect solution for smaller spaces. Say goodbye to cluttered countertops and hello to a beautifully chic and organized bathroom.

Here’s what mine looks like!

Suction Cup Organizers

These bad boys are a lifesaver for those who really need to maximize their bathroom real estate. You can attach them to any smooth surface, like a bathroom mirror or shower wall, and BAM! You’ve got a new storage spot for your everyday beauty products. I also like this option for smaller products.

Jewelry Trays

Jewelry trays are a stylish and functional addition to your bathroom. They can be used to store and organize jewelry, making more room for your makeup, perfumes, and other skincare products. The raised edges keep even the smallest items in place and the stylish design adds a touch of sophistication to your bathroom decor.

Hanging Mesh Pouches

If you’re in a tight squeeze in your bathroom, these mesh pouches are the way to go. You can hang them from a hook or towel bar and store your makeup, hair tools, and other products in one handy spot. And the mesh material allows you to easily see what’s inside, so you won’t waste any time searching for the right shade of lip gloss. Even though these are technically for the fridge, they make a great addition in the bathroom. Here’s a larger option too!

Lazy Susan

If you’re all about convenience, the Lazy Susan just might be your new best friend. You can store all your beauty products on the rotating tray, and easily spin it to access what you need. Talk about feeling fancy. No more reaching or twisting – it’s like having your own personal makeup assistant.

Stackable Drawers

Store your beauty products in these stackable drawers for a clutter-free bathroom. The clear design allows you to easily see and access all of your items, and the stackable design frees up valuable counter and shelf space. No more digging through a cluttered drawer to find that one perfect sheet mask that you’ve been saving but always forget to use.

Makeup Cart

This little rolling wonder is perfect for anyone who’s always on the go. You can roll it from the bedroom to the bathroom and even to the kitchen chasing that natural light, keeping all your beauty products organized and within reach. Plus, these carts have multiple shelves and drawers, so you can store everything from your makeup to your brushes to your larger skincare products too. It’s a little mobile makeup studio! If you want one with a little color, here’s one in pink.

Wicker Baskets

Store your beauty products in some seriously stylish baskets. These baskets are made of wicker, giving them a charming and natural vibe. They’re perfect for keeping your beauty products together, while still allowing you to see what’s inside. You can use one basket for all your products, or use multiple baskets to separate your products by category. They look so good on display in your bathroom that you’ll never want to hide them away in a drawer!

Metal Trays

Metal trays have an industrial look that is really chic. These trays are versatile and can be used for so many things, but they’re perfect for organizing your beauty products on your bathroom counter. You can use them to hold your makeup brushes, perfumes, or even your skincare larger moisturizers and creams. The sleek and modern design of the trays makes them a great addition to any bathroom decor. Plus, the metal material makes them easy to clean, so you can keep your beauty products looking fresh.

Magnetic Board

A magnetic board on your bathroom wall can be a total life-saver when it comes to organizing your makeup collection. You can attach your everyday products, like your tweezers and eyelash curler, to the board for easy access and visibility. Even more, the magnetic board adds a fun and unique touch to your bathroom decor. You can even get creative and use cute magnetic containers to store your beauty products!

With these tips and products, you can bring peace back to your daily makeup routine.

Give your future self time and peace by finally organizing all those makeup products. With an organized bathroom, getting ready in the morning will start to feel like a relaxing ritual, instead of  chaotic mayhem. No more searching and searching for that one product running out of the door at the last minute.

It’s more than just getting organized, it’s about changing the way that you start the day!
