I know it’s only September, but we are SO excited for Halloween in the Adams household! Thomas’ birthday is in early October, and since he’s fully obsessed with ghosts right now (we are so confused where that even came from), we’re celebrating his 3rd birthday with a Boo-Day party.
Since I’m in planning mode for that, and using halloween themed decorations and ideas, I’m already in the Halloween mindset. And now that Thomas is old enough to understand, I think he’s going to absolutely love trick-or-treating, and if I can find him a ghost costume that won’t be miserable for him to wear all night, I think he’ll be excited about that too.
In the spirit of costumes, I thought it would be fun to pull together a handful of the cutest toddler Halloween costumes I’ve seen while planning Thomas’ party. I’m not a big proponent of spending a lot of money on Halloween costumes, but thankfully Target, Amazon, and Zara Kids came through with cute, affordable, and somehow not tacky, ideas.
I’m breaking this post into two categories: little boys and little girls. I’m stereotyping a bit here, so be sure to check out both genders’ sections in case there is something your little one loves in the other one! I also included some ideas that you could wear if you want to dress up a little but not go into full-on costume mode.
I hope you’re able to find something cute for your kids to wear this fall!
One of the most expensive things I’ve ever ordered for Thomas was this golf caddie costume from Etsy. For Thomas’ first birthday, I was trying to come up with a fun idea to celebrate him without going fully over the top, and my content manager suggested we do a golf themed “par-tee” since Thomas was obsessed with golf at the time. She convinced me I needed this caddie costume because it was too cute to not buy, and because she told me I could use it for future children too. It’s true –– the front #1 is velcro-ed on, so we could easily get a #2 for our second baby to wear next fall.
It’s also worth noting that Tommy is a scratch golfer and played in college, and his dad is a golf pro, so it felt like a worthwhile investment for the sheer enjoyment of Tommy seeing Thomas in this costume. Plus, he wore it for Halloween that same year!
If you love this idea but the price tag is a no-go, you could definitely take a homemade route with a white jumpsuit and iron on a name on the back. I think that would actually be a very easy DIY project. Or, this more affordable Caddie costume is cute too.
Does it get any cuter than this fire truck costume? I don’t think so. If your child is as into firetrucks and firefighters as mine is, then this is a perfect costume idea. The fact that the lights actually light up and make sounds takes the cake. If you want to take it up a notch, you could wear something fire related when you take him trick or treating…maybe this flame headband?
If you think your child would hate how large the firetruck costume is, you could do this firefighter outfit instead. Or maybe you put your older child in the firefighter outfit and your youngest in the truck!
Originally I found this pirates costume from Zara that I LOVED, but most sizes are already sold out. Thankfully Target has a similar pirate outfit option. Order an eyepatch for yourself and wear your favorite gold hoop earrings to complete the family look. No one can arrrgggg-ue that you’re the best mom ever. ;).
I am so into Zara’s costume selection this year. I LOVE the little rice car driver look with a retro spin. It looks like they’re also making gloves to go with it. TOO CUTE!
Thomas actually wore a similar costume for a Halloween party last year. I love the reflective vest and hard hat combo. And I know most toddlers will love having their own hammer to hold too.
If your child loves your mail carriers as much as mine does, this UPS Worker costume would be easy and precious! You could even have him carry an Amazon mailer as his candy bag. I’m definitely buying this costume for Thomas since I can easily go as as my-influencer-self because I know my UPS guy way too well. 😉
Another adorable Zara find. This cowboy costume is wildly legit looking, and would pair perfectly with a white button down and jeans underneath. Just add a cowboy hat and boots to top it off. I feel like cowboy themed family outfits are also very easy to do yourself. Just throw on a pair of boots and a floral maxi dress to turn into Beth Dutton. That’s sort of what we did last year, actually!
This little medical scrub costume is such a cute option for kids who are into playing doctor! The set also comes in blue. You can easily buy a stethoscope (a play one or real one!) to wear around your neck. Or, just say you’re a doctor who is on call. 😉
Since Winston-Salem is the Krispy Kreme capital, I hope someone local will buy this doughnut costume for their child to wear! Just grab a Krispy Kreme hat at the store the next time you’re there to make it even more authentic. Be sure to get one for yourself too! (And a donut, of course.)
I know there are like a million princess outfits out there, but I feel like you can’t go wrong with a Snow White costume. And then you can dress like whatever Dwarf fits your mood that day (or at least fake it) with an easy t-shirt.
This piggy costume is so stinking cute. And unique! You could wear a bacon tshirt if you want to be funny or get your own pig ears.
Thomas isn’t into Disney (yet), but I have a lot of friends whose daughters would love to be Minnie Mouse! I like that this costume lights up – a perk for them AND you since it’ll help you keep eyes on them while trick-or-treating. Get some ears for yourself to be on theme!
I’m not sure about the face paint on the model (creeps me right out), but I do think this unicorn costume would be darling on a little girl.
I hope this helped get your Halloween spirit and ideas flowing! If you have other cute costume ideas for toddlers, please share!! Doing Halloween with a kiddo who actually cares is new for me!
